This program was introduced several years ago in the belief that our leaders needed the same sort of structured discipleship program as our older boys. Since that time a good number of men from all across North America have started down that exciting trail of personal development. To date six men, including two Canadians have completed all the requirements and have received the recognition of Herald of Christ for Men.
Rodney Snow
Rodney, from Red Deer, Alberta, was introduced to Battalion in his late teens. Under the leadership of a couple of godly men in Welland, Ont, he earned all of the ranks available, also completing the Skill Master Award and the Herald of Christ in 1984. After completing studies in Bible college and working in several positions, he joined the staff of CSB Canada in 1996. As an example to the men and boys he ministers to, he successfully completed his Herald for Men in 1999, becoming our first Herald of Christ for Men. Since then he suffered a severe stroke, but continues to participate in his local CSB group.
Dave Halverson
On June 30, 2002 Dave Halverson was recognized as a Herald of Christ for Men, during a very special service at Hope for Life Christian Fellowship in Calgary, Alberta. In addition to his service at his local church, Dave serves as a Area Assistant, and Camp Director at CSB Camp Teepee Pole. He is a key leader in Alberta.
The presentation was made by Regional Director, Wayne Pedersen, who was the developer of the Herald of Christ for Men. Dave is the fifth man, and second in Canada, to complete this challenging personal discipleship program. Congratulations Dave!
Honorary Heralds of Christ
Several years ago it was realized that there needed to be some special way of recognizing men who had made extraordinary contributions to the lives boys and young men personifying the characterstics of a Herald of Christ. As a result the President of CSB Canada established a special award known as an Honorary Herald of Christ. The following men have been recognized for their many years of helping boys become disciples of Christ.
Mel Tyler
In February 2001 the United Baptist Church of Minto, New Brunswick celebrated 25 years of ministry to the young men of that church and community. Mel was the man who has led the ministry throughout that time, also serving as an elder and adult Sunday School teacher. Several young men from his group have gone on to be pastors and church leaders across the Maritimes. At the end of the service, to the total surprise of Mel, Harold Browne, President of CSB Canada, recounted some of Mel's impact far beyond his Local church. He then presented Mel with the Pin and a commemorative Certificate. We even got Mel to shed a tear or two. Wally Mills
At 75th Anniversary service for Calvary Baptist Church in Oshawa, Ontario, Wally Mills, fondly known as Captain Wally, was recognized for his 45 years of ministry in CSB, serving as Captain at Calvary for more than 30 years, as Camp Director and Board member at Camp Kakeka for many years, and as Regional Director for CSB for several years. He helped many young men become men of God, with numerous of them serving as pastors and leaders of Christian organizations around the world.
Wayne Pedersen
Wayne Pedersen grew up in Christian Service Brigade, and became a Herald Of Christ. He served on the staff of CSB Canada for twenty years. In addition to serving as a Regional Director for much of that time, he headed up the Program Department in Burlington for a number of years. When the office in Canada closed in 1994, he remained, serving as the representative for all of western Canada. Few know of the efforts he put in to helping the ministry to survive. The part of the ministry thar was closest to his heart was Camp Teepee, where he wore many hats. At a special celebration in Calgary in October 2002 to thank him for his extraordinary service to the leaders of Alberta, Canada he was recognized as an Honorary Herald of Christ. One of his lasting contribution was the Herald of Christ for Men.
Dave Wilson, Ken Miller, Fred Thurger, and Gord Banman
In February 2005 Calvary Temple in Winnipeg celebrated 50 years of continuous ministry to boys and young men in their church and community. As part of that celebration it was decided to recognize the impact on that ministry of four of the leaders.
Dave Wilson
is the longest serving leader in Canada. When his church started CSB in the 1950s, he was their first Captain. My first encounter with him was several years ago, when he brought to my attention some serious limitations with a recently issued new manual for boys. His sons were involved in the program, and today even his grandsons. Several years ago, at a time when most people had retired from active Christian service, he stepped in to be the Captain of Battalion. He continues to be involved with the guys, winning and training them for Christ. A True Herald of Christ.
Ken Miller
was a boy at Unit 590 when the ministry started back in the 50s. He was one of the first Non Coms. Upon finishing school he joined the Navy and was going to see the world. However, he had caught the Brigade bug, and wherever he went for the next 45 plus years, he got involved as a leader with CSB. From my understanding he was involved with starting at least 3 new Battalions, including at his current church. His passion for ministry to boys is as great today as ever. He is one of our great ambassadors for this ministry.
Fred Thurner
has been Mr. Sports at CT. Although he is many years more mature that the fellows, few if any of them can keep up to him in any test of strength or endurance. We not not certain how many years he has served the Lord in this ministry, he goes back to atleast 1970. Several years ago he fell off a ladder and broke several bones. That kind of slowed him down a bit, but didn't stop him. At the 65th anniversary campout at Manhattan Beach, we did an Elijah fire. His task was to release the fire ball from heaven and start the fire. As we started, a thunder storm moved in and it started to pour. There Fred was at the top of an aluminum ladder, leaning against the only tree in the area, grounded by the steel wire. The fireball was to be a roll of toilet paper soaked in kerosene to be slid down a steel cable to the centre of the fire. At the appropriate time the fire ball was released and the campfire burst into flame. It was a total success. The Lord continues to use this man as one the leaders in Battalion, equipping the young men to be God's leaders for the 21 century.
Gord Banman
is one man who has stood taller than almost anyone over the years in CSB in his church, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and in Canada. If we were to ask who is Mr CSB, most of you would immediately identify him as that. Several years ago, during one of my first visits to Manitoba, I challenged the men at the Men's Conference. A few days later, as I was hurtling down the highway I received a phone from one of the attendees, asking how he could apply for the job. I told him He just did.
Shortly after he became our rep for the second time. Within a few months the situation with the importation of CSB supplies into Canada was almost totally out of control. He decided to add the operation of the Supply Centre for Canada to his duties to help resolve those problems. He converted one of the rooms in his home to the Supply Centre. Only the Lord knows how important that decision was. Few men are as committed to CSB and the Lord as Gord.
Jack Hooper
Few men have served in CSB as Jack Hooper of Unit #1118, Calvary Baptist Oshawa has. He has served God for 48 years in CSB, serving as a Stockade Ranger, Battalion Lieutenant and presently as a Treeclimber Leader. After the presentation in February, 2006 Jack made a short speech in which he said there are three ways of looking at ministry, first you can do nothing and rust out, second you can work too hard on your own strength and burn out, or you can continue to wholeheartedly serve with the Lord's strength and just wear out. What a great challenge.
What About You ???
We are proud of these men and their accomplishments. As CSB leaders they understand that one of the best ways to lead is by example."Do you want to follow these men's example? If you are looking for a challenge that will help you grow as a man, you need to consider working toward your Herald of Christ for Men.
